5 Easy Enrichment Activities to Keep Your Pet Happy at Home

As loving pet parents, we want our pets to be happy and healthy. We provide them with nutritious food, regular vet check-ups, and plenty of affection. But are we doing enough to keep their minds engaged? Just like humans, pets can get bored, and boredom can lead to a host of behavioral issues, from destructive chewing to anxiety.

This is where enrichment comes in. Enrichment is all about providing your pet with stimulating activities that engage their natural instincts. At Yesspet, we incorporate enrichment into every visit, and it’s something you can easily do at home too. Here are five simple enrichment activities to get you started.

1. Puzzle Feeders: Make Mealtime a Game

In the wild, animals have to work for their food. Our domesticated pets, on the other hand, are used to being served their meals in a bowl. While convenient, this does little to stimulate their minds. Puzzle feeders are a fantastic way to turn mealtime into a fun and challenging game.

There are a wide variety of puzzle feeders available for both dogs and cats, ranging from simple to complex. You can also make your own by hiding food in a muffin tin with tennis balls on top, or by simply scattering their kibble around the room for them to find.

2. Scent Work: Let Their Noses Lead the Way

A dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more powerful than ours. Engaging this powerful sense is a fantastic way to provide mental stimulation. You can start with a simple “find the treat” game, hiding a high-value treat in another room and encouraging your dog to find it.

For cats, you can use catnip or silvervine to create a stimulating sensory experience. Try hiding a catnip-filled toy or sprinkling some dried catnip in a new cardboard box for them to explore.

3. DIY Obstacle Course: Get Moving and Have Fun

You don’t need fancy equipment to create a fun obstacle course for your pet. Use pillows, blankets, and furniture to create tunnels, jumps, and weaving poles. Encourage your pet to navigate the course with treats and praise.

This is a great way to provide physical exercise and mental stimulation, especially on a hot Arizona day when a long walk might not be an option.

4. New Toys and Rotations: Keep Things Fresh and Exciting

Just like children, pets can get bored with the same old toys. Instead of leaving all their toys out all the time, try rotating them every few days. This will make old toys feel new and exciting again.

You can also introduce new and interesting toys, such as those with different textures, sounds, or smells. For cats, a simple cardboard box or a crinkly paper bag can provide hours of entertainment.

5. Quality Time and Training: Strengthen Your Bond

Enrichment doesn’t always have to involve food or toys. Simply spending quality time with your pet and teaching them a new trick can be incredibly stimulating. Training sessions not only engage their minds but also strengthen the bond between you and your pet.

Try teaching your dog a new command, or work on clicker training with your cat. Even a few minutes of focused attention and positive reinforcement can make a big difference in your pet’s day.
