Arizona Pet Care: Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Desert Heat

Living in Ahwatukee, we’re blessed with beautiful sunny weather for most of the year. However, the Arizona heat also presents unique challenges for our beloved pets. As responsible pet parents, it’s crucial to be aware of these risks and take proactive steps to keep our furry family members safe and comfortable, especially during the hot summer months.

At Yesspet, our professional pet sitters are trained to handle the specific demands of Arizona pet care. Here are some of our top tips for navigating the desert heat with your pet.

1. Never, Ever Leave Your Pet in a Car

This cannot be stressed enough. On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a car can soar to over 120 degrees in just 30 minutes. Even with the windows cracked, a car can quickly become a deadly oven. There is no safe amount of time to leave a pet unattended in a vehicle in Arizona. If you’re running errands, it’s best to leave your pet at home where they are safe and cool.

2. Be Mindful of Hot Pavement

Asphalt and concrete can get incredibly hot in the Arizona sun, reaching temperatures that can easily burn your pet’s sensitive paw pads. A good rule of thumb is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.

Schedule walks for the early morning or late evening when the ground has had a chance to cool down. If you must walk your dog during the day, stick to grassy areas or consider using protective booties.

3. Provide Plenty of Water and Shade

Dehydration is a serious risk for pets in a hot climate. Always make sure your pet has access to fresh, cool water, both indoors and outdoors. If you’re spending time outside, bring a portable water bowl and offer your pet frequent drinks.

Shade is also essential. If your pet spends time in the backyard, ensure they have a cool, shady spot to rest. A covered patio, a large tree, or a raised cot that allows for air circulation can all provide a welcome respite from the sun.

4. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency. It’s crucial to know the signs so you can act quickly. These include:

  • Heavy panting and difficulty breathing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Bright red gums and tongue
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Unsteadiness or collapse
  • Disorientation

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right away.

5. Consider Professional In-Home Pet Care

When you’re away from home, you want to be sure your pet is safe and comfortable. An in-home pet sitter can provide the peace of mind you need. Our professional sitters will ensure your pet has plenty of water, stays cool indoors during the hottest parts of the day, and receives the attentive care they need to thrive in the Arizona climate.
